Professor Kaufman summarized his work:
The results of this research are twofold: the Second Temple was taper-shaped towards the west, and the Dome of the Spirits or Tablets (300 ft north of the Dome) shelters the Foundation Stone of the Holy of Holies.
The Temple picture is a jigsaw puzzle of which only a few pieces are archaeological. The rest has to be completed by other means. The picture of the First Temple is described well in the Temple Scroll of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Several features remain with the Second Temple, particularly the Eastern Wall of the Temple Area.
The Second Temple picture has been solved by archaeological, literary and other sources and provides more than a sketch. It approaches an actual architectural plan. Most importantly, it would appear that Divine Providence has ensured that no major structure occupy the actual site of the Temple!
This research was conducted in the spirit of seeking the truth, My hope is that it will contribute to the realization expressed by Isaiah:
My House shall be called, “A House of Prayer for all people.”
(Kaufman, Temple Mount: Where is the Holy of Holies, condensed, p. 145)
